Spring Term 2008 Meetings

We had our first meeting for 2008 on the 4th of January. We had a photo quiz about happenings in 2007, made our own pizza and played a fast ball game. We had at least 4 new scouts and two visitors. What a good start for the new year! We also practised our fire drill.

On Saturday, 5 Jan 2008 we cleaned up the Scout path, fire place, planted some new plants and put up some bird and bat boxes. Thanks to all of you that managed to help!

On Friday (11th of January), Nathan from the RNLI visited us and explained everything about Lifeboats and their volunteers. They will have a fundraising day on the 25th of January 2008 and our Scouts will collect some money during their troop meeting - they have already made plans… One of the plans might be ‘Pie the leaders or was it the patrol leaders?’

On Friday the 18th of January 2008 we visited St Mary’s Church in Twickenham. We went up the tower, tried to ring the bells, did handbell ringing and tried splicing.

Friday, 25th of January 2008: we did some fundraising for the RNLI (see 11 Jan 2008 as well). We didn’t have to wear uniform but had to pay £1.00 for the privilege. We could buy tickets to pie our leaders and patrol leaders. We ended up rather sticky and wet! But we did our bit for the fundraising! We collected about £58.00!

On Friday, the 1st of February 2008, we unpacked our patrol boxes, checked all our equipment (cooking) and made pancakes! We all took turns to try and make the best pancakes. Tossing pancakes was was a bit tricky in the beginning but now we are quite good at it!

We also had a visitor, Paul Kershaw. He presented the ‘Jack Petchey Achievement Award’ to one of our scouts. She completed all her tasks for the Chief Scout’s Award. The money will be used by our whole scout troop.

Further details about the award are at http://www.jackpetcheyfoundation.org.uk.

Our Leaders (Karin and Ronelle) went on a Hillwalking training weekend. Marian and the Explorers ran the evening in their place (8 Feb 2008).

Friday, 15 February 2008: We worked on our Scout Promise and the Scout Law. We also played the trust game where the whole troop holds on to a rope (circular) and one or two scouts walks on the rope. Great fun and hard work!

Friday, 29 February 2008: the Scouts started working on their nautical skill, e.g. where is port and where is starboard on a boat.

Saturday 01 March Cooking Day and Sleepover 10.00 on Saturday to 11.00 on Sunday

The Scouts wrapped up warm and wore their scruffiest kit. And did backwoods cooking for the day (cooking without utensils on open fires). We went on a night hike through Richmond Park and then ate soup and bread (that we baked ourselves). Luckily we could sleep inside the hut.

On Sunday morning we made our own pancakes for breakfast. We could all practise lighting the gas cookers with matches.

And then back home for a well-deserved rest before the week started!

Celebration, Celebration, Celebration … for all Parents, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers.

When: Monday 03 March 5.45 for 6.00 to 7.30pm

Where: Petersham Village Hall, Bute Avenue, off Sudbrook Lane (next to church building with Jesus looking down from the top of the spire)

Dress code: Uniform

Delia Rosenbaum was our guest conductor leading us in celebratory songs for the occasions. This was to be something like a campfire entertainment except that it was indoors without logs to sit on and no real fire. It was great fun with everybody joining in.

What did we celebrate?

1. Surprise Party for someone…

2. Beaver Party - 20th Anniversary of Beavers at Petersham & Ham.

3. Restart of Eric the Red Explorer Unit.

Friday, 7 March 2008 Father Tim visited us and told us how we could earn our Faith Badge. We also went on a night walk so that the Cubs could arrive at the Scout Hut for their sleepover.

Friday, 14 March 2008 Ellie Bradley showed us how to paint bisque plates and bowls. We enjoyed the freedom of deciding how we wanted to design and paint our own plates. We’ll only get the finished plates and bowls back once they have been fired. They should be ready on the 28th of March 2008.
