The Great River Race Sept 8th 2007…22+ Miles of Non Stop RowingOur intrepid Scouts took part once again, below is Phoenix 2 crewed by under 14 year olds.
The scouts crossed the finish line at 18:1:48 hours with a lapsed time of 4:13:25 hours
The Dorney finished at 17:29:51 hours with a lapsed time of 3:36:47 hours The George Vancouver Below with Greenwich finish line in the distance, finished at 17:38:29 hours, Lapsed time 3:46:26 hours
Then followed the great return home, towing Phoenix II, George Vancouver & Dorney astern in line in what was described by an ignorant floating gin palace captain as a “Dingy” earlier in the day. Articfox x Kindly lent by Alex Lonsdale for the event is a bit more than a “dingy”, We set out at the same time as another small tug towing 4 abreast and 3 - 4 in line, it soon vanished out of sight, still we only had to follow 20 or so life jackets left like a paper chase. The life jackets were obviously not secured in the skiff’s they were left in, plastic bags were a constant nuisance fouling the propeller around the Barnes Bridge area. Richmond Lock was where we caught up with the small tug that left at the same time, and oh dear one or more of the unlit towed vessels had holes in them (allegedly). We arrived and completed mooring our three skiffs at 02:00 Sunday Morning, by the time we had put Articfox x to bed and driven home it was 03:00 Sunday morning. Our trip was without incident apart from plastic bags! We have heard subsequently that the floating gin palace sunk at Isleworth, how true this is we can not say.
